Castle Gardens
|
The beautiful gardens at Lismore Castle are set in seven acres within the outer walls and provide spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
They are among the oldest formal gardens in Ireland, retaining much of their Jacobean form. The herbaceous border gives an impressive show of colour and there is a fine selection of specimen magnolias, camellias, and rhododendrons, as well as a remarkable yew walk where Edmund Spenser is said to have written the epic poem ‘Faerie Queen'.
While wandering through the gardens, visitors are invited to stumble upon and enjoy several pieces of contemporary sculpture, nestled among the plants and tree, these include works by Antony Gormley, Elis O'Connell, Emily Young, David Nash, Franz West and most recently Roger Hiorns.
